1.) Discomfort from wires, hooks, rough edges, or ligatures

When you first get your braces or after an adjustment, you may feel sharp edges or small projections that are difficult to get used to. Your doctor or staff will give you soft orthodontic wax which can be purchased at most major drug stores.

Pinch off a small piece of wax and roll it into a little ball. Dry the area off with cotton or tissue and place it on the irritated area and push firmly in place. Remove the wax when eating or brushing.

2.) Elastic tie or power chain comes off

As long as the wire remains in the other braces, a bracket without an elastic tie or power chain is not a problem. Please call our office during business hours to let us know about the problem.

3.) Expansion appliance is loose or broken

If one or both bands on the back teeth are loose, please call us during business hours. Be extra careful when chewing so not to dislodge the band.

If you are experiencing discomfort or pain from your appliance because it is loose, please call our office as soon as possible. Remember: no hard or sticky foods!

4.) Loose band or brackets

Occasionally, a band or bracket may become loose. Eating hard or sticky foods is the usual cause. In most cases, brackets will remain attached to the archwire so that you can either place a small piece of orthodontic wax on it if it is causing you discomfort or it can be removed by using tweezers or an opened paper clip to remove the rubber tie around it.

If you wear either headgear or rubber bands and a band becomes loose, discontinue wear and call our office during regular business hours to schedule a repair appointment.

5.) Wire is too long or has come out of bracket or band

As teeth move, a wire may lengthen or shorten. A long wire can be clipped with a pair of wire cutters (i.e. nail cutters) as close to the bracket as you can. If a wire comes out of the back band, you may try to reinsert it with a pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers. Wax may also be used to protect you from the wire. Please call our office the next business day to schedule and appointment.

6.) Sore teeth

After routine orthodontic adjustments, it can be normal for your teeth, mouth, or gums to experience some discomfort. If you are not allergic to these medications, Tylenol or Advil can be used as well as wam salt water rinses.

7.) Loose teeth

This is very common...no need to worry. The teeth have to loosen up in order to move. They will eventually tighten back up in their new positions. If you are concerned, please ask the doctor at your next appointment.

8.) Separators have fallen out

This is not an emergency and simply means that adequate space for the fitting of bands has been achieved. Please call the office on the next business day to have them replaced prior to your next scheduled appointment.
