When you get your braces off, you want to have a beautiful smile, don’t you? Well, if so, you’re not alone. This is why many people try to avoid having white spots on their teeth. You should work on that as well. Having white spots on the teeth is common because plaque is so difficult to remove when you have braces. However, it’s definitely preventable.

The white spots occur because the plaque clings to the smile and removes beneficial minerals from the tooth enamel, creating the white spots. To help you avoid this problem, our orthodontist, Dr. Steven Jung, encourages you to do a couple things.

First, remove the plaque from your teeth. Although it’s difficult while you have braces, it’s not impossible. All you need to do is brush every morning and night and floss once a day. If possible, brush and floss more, like after each meal and snack. As you brush and floss, thoroughly clean the spaces around the brackets and under the wires. You also need to visit your dentist every six months for a professional dental cleaning.

Second, use fluoride toothpaste. This is beneficial because fluoride can strengthen your tooth enamel, which can make it hard for the plaque to remove the minerals from your chompers. So, use fluoride toothpaste each time you brush. You can also expose your smile to fluoride by using fluoride mouthwash, receiving a professional fluoride treatment, and drinking fluoridated water.
