If you are nearing the end of your time wearing braces, congratulations! You will enjoy your new smile and it will be a relief to have them off. But you are not done yet. You are almost done, but not quite! Your braces have done the hard work of moving your teeth into their proper alignment, and you will need to wear a retainer to make sure that they stay that way.
Our dentist, Dr. Steven Jung will tell you how long you need to wear your retainer. The amount of time each person needs to wear a retainer will differ from person to person. But if you don’t wear it for the directed amount of time, your teeth could start to move back to their old spaces.
If you have a fixed retainer, it will be cemented behind your teeth and only the dentist will be able to remove it you will need to brush it and floss along with your teeth. If you have a removable retainer, you should gently clean it with a soft-bristled toothbrush using a vinegar and water solution or a mild dish or hand soap. You can also use non-abrasive toothpaste. Store it overnight in a denture soaking solution to keep it clean and help it maintain its shape. You should take your retainer out when you eat or play sports, and always make sure that you keep it in the container the dentist gives you.
